TEFL FRANCE IN-DEPTH

Toulouse is nestled in the south west of France, a couple of hours from each coast. You can get to the west coast of Biarritz for fabulous beaches, Bordeaux for the fantastic wine, or Albi – an up and coming city resonant of Toulouse!

There’s a large student population – making up around a fifth of the overall inhabitants! Meaning there’s a young vibe and dynamic buzz to the city. It’s been famed as the number 1 city to study in, in all of France.

Toulouse is known as ‘La Ville Rose’ – called so because of the red brick build architecture, which has a warm glow at sunset. A sight to behold.

There are a wealth of cafes, patisseries, restaurants, parks, the old historic town centre and the lively main square – more than enough to keep you occupied for weekends on end! When you fancy a trip out of the city, transportation is plentiful and cheap. You can walk everywhere within the city, or hire a bike for a faster trip!

Toulouse is a fantastic city, with gorgeous weather and culture. You’ll not be disappointed and will certainly remember your time spent in this amazing place.

Toulouse is known as the liveliest city in south west France, with a dynamic young population. Meaning there is plenty to see and do! The city boasts fantastic cafes, nightlife, attractions which you’ll be able to afford easily on your TEFL teachers salary.

Living costs are around €1000-€1500 Euro per month in Toulouse, depending mainly on the type of accommodation you choose to stay in.

There’s a wealth of local suppliers, bakers, butchers, fruit and veg, meaning you can live as you do at home without hefty restaurant bills 3 times per day! All apartments usually have a fully equipped kitchen, so you’ll be cooking Cordon Bleu in no time! Voila!

It’s recommended to have savings of approx €2500 Euro before you begin your program, to live comfortably until you’re paid by your employer, which is usually at the end of your first month teaching.

OPTIONS DURING THE COURSE

You’ll be asked for your accommodation preferences before you arrive, and the team will match you with the right property for you! You’ll pay your rent directly to the landlord upon arrival.

A host family can also be arranged, this costs between €400-€700 EUR per month, whilst apartments begin around €500 per month.

OPTIONS AFTER THE COURSE

It all comes down to where you decide to live and work, following the course! You’ll have assistance from the team to ensure you have your new, more permanent accommodation secured, ready for the time you begin teaching.

Accommodation in Toulouse is usually shared or studio apartments, for around €500 EUR per month upwards. Sharing apartments is common, you’ll find so many like-minded people in the city to become roommates!

  • Course format

This course is a 120-hour, 4-week TEFL certification. It’s intensive and includes many teaching practices and planning sessions. You’ll be studying from 9.00am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday. It’s a well planned course with breaks and less homework than other programs.

  • Teaching practices

You’ll have 6 individual teaching practices throughout the course. Each day you’ll also be lesson planning and studying new teaching methods.

  • Type of assessment

You’ll be assessed continually throughout the 4 weeks training with observations from your trainers and peers.

  • Course location and centre

The training centre is in the centre of Toulouse, on Allees Federic Mistral. It’s so central and in a lovely area of the city.

  • Requirements

To complete the TEFL course you need to be at least 18 years old (although each applicant is considered on a case by case basis). You can also be a non-native speaker of English as long as you have a level C1 or above, which will be tested during the interview. A Bachelors degree (in any discipline) is preferred, however there are plenty of TEFL jobs for non degree holders.

  • Job market and employment possibility

There’s a good demand for TEFL teachers in France, in Toulouse and many other cities. Outside of the country, TEFL course team works with you to find jobs where you’d like to work – in any corner of the world! You’re fully assisted in securing your job after training.

  • Visa Requirements

EU passport holders can live and work in France without restrictions. Canadians, Australians and New Zealanders can get a “working holiday visa” for France, so they can do the course and then teach English here  For all other Non-EU passport holders, you will need a visa to live, study and work in France for longer than 3 months. We can arrange this with you before you arrive in France. You’ll need a study course of 6 months or more of French language usually. This will allow you to live and work in France for longer than 90 days.

France boasts a wealth of teaching roles! You’ll usually teach in towns or cities, at language schools or summer camps. TEFL teachers usually have a teaching schedule of 20-25 hours per week, with your down time needed for lesson planning, grading etc. You can also take advantage of offering private one to one tutoring, you’ll boost your income significantly!

Hiring is year-round so there’s nothing stopping you leaving as soon as you’re ready.

You can expect to earn €1200 – €2000 Euro per month depending on job type and hours worked. Most people register as an ‘auto-entrepreneur’ in France, meaning you can work for multiple language centres and privately, to build up your full time schedule.

Language centre positions pay between €18-€30 Euro per hour, and private teaching €30 + per hour. There’s the opportunity to earn very nicely in France!
